Equine Massage Techniques & Exploration
As a horse lover, rider and massage therapist, I truly enjoy exploring the most current applications “in the field” for equine massage.
Horses are individuals, therefore no “one” technique will work for every horse. Whether in the field or during class, the practitioner needs to be skilled in approaching the horse in different ways. When I am approached with the question “what technique do you use?” My answer is simply “many”.
In 1985, I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Jack Meagher, known as the pioneer of equine massage in the United States. I followed him for many years and also attended his seminars. Jack’s emphasis and technique was on equine Sportsmassage (sports massage) and Equine Sports Therapy.
When people ask what I do, I typically say “Myofascial sports massage”. After many years of human training and therapy work, I pushed my knowledge and skill set to sports massage. I continue to study the fascial system, kinesio taping and Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM).
After relenting many years ago to the benefits of energy work, while addressing the many fascial and kinesthetic issues I was treating in the horse, there was a huge energetic component that had to be tapped into. From this, in 2006 I started teaching Equine Fascial Energetics seminars.
A blend of all these techniques are taught in each EM/MT class and utilized by in the field when treating many horses during my appointments. The importance of equine anatomy, kinesiology, handling and proper therapist body mechanics are greatly emphasized.
Equine Blading
Myofascial Blading (instrument assisted soft tissue manipulation) is an advanced manual therapy technique that is often used for relieving pain and tension within the muscle. Joyce uses a very particular technique for very effective neuro-muscular response.
Equine Kinesio Taping
This is a short video demonstration on the equine kinesiology taping techniques we teach in our certification classes. Kinesio taping helps relieve muscle tension and is a very effective adjunctive therapy for sport horses and riders.
